Transvaal House Pet-Friendly Cottage description

Holiday home
Situated on the outskirts of the ancient crofting village of Durness lies this large holiday home. With simple, no-nonsense accommodation, the property is comfortable and minimal, though well equipped throughout. Able to sleep nine people in two double rooms, a family room with three single beds and a room containing adult bunks, this home is a great location for anyone looking to go on holiday with a large group of friends or their extended family. With the village of Durness close by, with its wide range of activities, this makes a great base to explore northern Scotland.

The ancient village of Durness – the most northerly on mainland Scotland – remains largely unspoilt and offers a truly peaceful location amidst wild, awe inspiring landscapes. Steeped in history, the village houses evidence of an eighth century Christian settlement as well as the Viking invasions and various early cave dwellings. The surrounding rugged coastline is a mixture of imposing cliffs and sweeping sandy beaches and makes a fantastic place for birdwatchers to spy some rarer species. Within easy reach of the Highlands and Britain's most Northerly golf course, the region also offers visitors the chance to see a large colony of puffins at nearby Faraid Head. Situated on the site of an old RAF base, the local craft village offers a vide selection of local artwork and produce.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

In and around Durness is simply stunning. It was great after a day out exploring to come back to the well presented property. The space was good in and outside the house. It was cosy and homely with everything you could possibly need in the kitchen (and more!).

The house was lovely and comfortable. I have never stayed in a better equipped house, there were lots of crockery and cooking utensils. The log burner and coal fire made it cosy as it was unusually cold for May. The house isn't posh which suited us fine with a 2 year old and our dog, but it was homely, had a lovely feel and we would highly recommend it. The housekeeper was lovely and the view from the kitchen window cannot be beaten! Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Liked the location and views. It was a house we could relax and feel at home in - comfortable and homely rather than immaculate and luxurious. Liked the sun porch on the front, the big kitchen with wood burning stove and the view from the kitchen window. The beds were very comfortable.

Good access to clean beaches and a local shop, people very friendly. House suited our needs and was clean and well equipped. It had a cosy overall feel to it and was large enough for our family and in our price range. Kids loved smoo cave and cocoa mountains hot chocolate, the local shop was reasonably priced and has a large range of items. Beaches were glorious with rock pools full of crabs, eels and even several sea slugs! Overall a fantastic holiday in a quiet area but lots to do, would definitely recommend!

Transvaal house was a wonderful cottage the village was extremely friendly. Long drive from Manchester but able to walk everywhere once there. The kitchen was my favourite room; the views were incredible. There was wildlife in abundance around the area.

An amazing location with great mountains and beaches. The conservatory was useful - and there was plenty of space for coats and boots. The wood-burning stove and coal fire were very welcome.

This was a really good, really well equipped house in a fantastic location. It was very comfy. There were so many walks and so much to do around Durness that we hardly had to drive anywhere. The beaches are amazing. Smoo Cave was a brilliant afternoon out.

Cocoa Mountain at the Balhakeil Craft Village well worth a visit if you like chocolate. Beautiful beach and desert nearby! Cape Wrath trip involves ferry and minibus, but awesome. Delicious dinner served at the Mackay Rooms.

Easy open access to the sea, on foot 1 mile. Always a breeze and plenty of space. House really nice inside and out.

Had a lovely time up in Durness. The house was comfortable and warm with a multifuel stove in the kitchen and an open fire in the sitting room. The local shop delivers coal and it was waiting for us when we arrived so we were cosy from the first night. Plenty of nice walks and stunning beaches in the area and Smoo Cave is well worth a visit. The drive down to Ullapool is lovely as well . Would stay again.

Booked through Sykes cottages. Pick up of keys seamless. House chilly as all older properties can be but heaters and coal fires available. Would prefer heating to be included and wished this projected cost was added to rental agreement however trivial complaint. Property was exceptionally well stocked with the exception of towels for some reason. There were a range of kitchen utensils that I had no idea what they were for and am looking them up on google! The property was well located with lots to explore in the area. If you are travelling with smaller children take some games as the ones in house are past their best with too much missing to be useful. The view from the kitchen was great and I liked the kitchen best as roomy.

the cottage was lovely and very comfortable. The kitchen was the best room in the house due to the beautiful view out of the windows. Everything is within walking distance. Durness is stuning we were blessed with lovely weather despite going in febuary.

Booking through Sykes Cottages was smooth and simple. The caretaker was friendly, helpful but not intrusive (we only saw her twice and that was at our request). The cottage was very clean, comfortable and perfectly situated. We especially liked the open fire in the lounge and the wood burner in the kitchen. The purpose of our holiday was to try to get some pictures of the Northern Lights and we were blessed with amazing displays on two nights. We needed a location that was isolated but not too remote as my wife is disabled. Durness has everything we needed, a local, well stocked shop and quiet, friendly pubs and cafes. Oh, and don't miss the chocolate factory less than half a mile up the road. The only downside was that everything was very expensive. I had heard that the Scottish national pastime was overcharging and it was certainly true. Having said that, they did it with a smile. I wouldn't hesitate to go again and in fact, we are planning to do just that. Thank you.

Transvaal house was excellent accomodation for us and our children, it was extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean and had everything you could possibly need and more. The location was amazing and there was so much to do in the immediate vicinity we didin't drive anymore than 3 miles away through the whole holiday.

A lovely cottage suitable for a large family who aren't bothered about fancy modern matching furniture and fittings, but just want a comfortable cottage to feel at home in. Lovely log burner. Amazingly well equiped kitchen and superb location.
