Whiteholme Cottage Family Cottage description

Holiday home
Nestled on a hillside above the tiny village of Backbarrow is this attractive terraced Lakeland property. Just a stone's throw from the southern tip of Lake Windermere and with breathtaking views of the surrounding fells, this charming property is well-equipped and thoughtfully presented. The cottage also comes with a modern fitted kitchen and a living room with multi-fuel stove and dining area, as well as a beautiful garden - giving guests the chance to enjoy alfresco dining on warm summer nights or a mug of something hot by the fire in winter.

On the southern tip of Lake Windermere and by the banks of the River Leven is the charming village of Backbarrow. Set amidst the breathtaking Lake District scenery, this pretty village makes an excellent place from which to explore the rest of this lovely region. A great way to see the wonderful local scenery is on the famous Furness Railway which runs between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge, or take a look at the Aquarium of the Lakes which uses naturally themed habitats to bring the history of the Lakes vividly to life. Lake Windermere itself offers some magnificent views, as do the surrounding fells and the picturesque village of Hawkshead – a place that inspired such internationally well known authors as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.

A fantastic cottage in a perfect location for exploring the Lake District. The cottage was a real home from home, very comfortable and relaxing. We walked our socks off and enjoyed coming back to the cottage to put our feet up. It was recommended by my sister who visited last year and I will recommend it to anyone that asks!

September 2012
We wrote in the Visitors Book that as much as where you go and what you do makes your holiday that where you stay also makes it memorable and enjoyable and Whiteholm Cottage did that for us. The fact that the owner came to meet us there and show us round, gave us hints and tips about where to go and what to do all added to the charm of the place and we would certainly go again.
Mrs Brown

July 2012
This was a superb holiday cottage for our family (2 adults and a child). Our daughter loved playing in the cottage, and I think was disappointed that we went out so much! We all loved the garden. It was so peaceful to be in a calm, clean, uncluttered space indoors. The owner is hugely thoughtful and genuinely welcoming, as if we were her house guests, so that we really were able to treat the place as a home for the week. She's clearly thought carefully about what it is useful to have around in a holiday home and has been generous in supplying those touches. We loved having the books and games, the real fire and plenty of towels. There was loads of information about the area and she gave us some good suggestions about local walks direct from the cottage too.
Mr Shipp
November 2010
The property was better than we imagined. This was our first cottage holiday, it has certainly set a standard that will be hard to beat. We did not need to take anything; it was all provided. The owner was really helpful, even had the kettle boiling when we arrived after a 6 hour drive. Fantastic!
Mrs Pritchard
November 2010
What a lovely little haven and 'bolt hole' for a weary couple. The welcome we received was so kind and much appreciated. We would highly recommend this 'home from home'. The little tips of places to eat, walks to go on, things to see and do - there are some lessons that could be learnt from this couple on how to make you want to come back again.
Ms Sherriff
February 2011
Whiteholme Cottage was a beautifully presented cottage with everything you could wish for. The owners were very friendly and even waited for us when we were late arriving. The area was fantastic for walking with lots to do and places to visit. It made our day when we were able to come home to the wonderfully comfortable cottage and light the fire. Overall the cottage was one of the best I have ever stayed in and I would definitely visit again and tell friends and family.
Ms Hodgson
March 2011
The location of the property provides an ideal base for the Lakes. The cottage owners provided lots of little extras like breakfast cereals, milk and a bottle of cava. All of the basics, including washing up materials, tea, coffee and toilet rolls were available. We enjoyed having the open fire, as it added to the homely feel of the cottage, particularly on cold February evenings.
Mr Stansfield

Courtesy and hospitality of the host and impeccability of the cottage with attention to every minute detail.
Mrs Nokes
July 2010
Having stayed in many cottages over the years this has to be the best. It is plenty big enough for 4 adults. It was clean, homely and very well equipped and appointed - it was like staying at a friends home. It felt like a home rather than a house. The garden was lovely with fantastic views. Being met by the friendly owner when we arrived was also a nice touch as was the bottle of bubbly she had left us in the fridge.
Mr Brown
October 2010
Beautiful location, fantastic views - a great place to relax. Well equipped cottage with lots of extras - all your basics - tea, coffee, sugar, condiments, plus milk, cereals and a bottle of fizz! Really nice touches and not normally found. Others would do well to follow suit! Garden was lovely, just a shame the weather didn't allow us to take much advantage of it!
Mrs Raw

There was nothing you could fault with the cottage - fabulous view, comfortable and cosy rooms, wood for a real fire in the evenings, and TV and games to amuse the kids. Even nuts provided to feed the birds! Obviously a very thoughtful and kind owner. The weather was great too, which I know you can't take credit for but it helps! Another fabulous Sykes cottage (our 4th)- I continue to recommend you to my friends.

I liked where the cottage was situated the scenery was beautiful, and was in easy reach of all the main places to go. I have stayed in places of higher grades and this cottage was much better than them. I loved the local walks and the ferry on Lake Windermere, as well as all the chocolate shops!
Mr Thompson

August 2005
The beautiful garden with the amazing view of the railway and waterfall. It made you want to stay at the cottage rather than go out and about. Cottage itself could not be faulted. Reminded me of holidays I took as a child in Ireland. Wonderful. Will hopefully be booking for next year.
August 2013
Started with a great welcome by the lovely owner, who gave us a full tour and explained how to use everything (where the heating controls were etc). The cottage is a lovely, homely place with enough space to have a comfortable evening in. The cottage also has a beautiful garden which has views for miles over valleys and hills. It's in a perfect location to explore all the Lakes, but especially all the South Lakes attractions with nothing more than 30mins drive away. Lovely pub only 30mins walk - well worth the walk!! Definitely want to go back!

The cottage is very comprehensively equipped and it has some thoughtful touches. The Owner was extremely helpful and offered much useful information on hand over. The location couldn't be bettered being easily accessible from the motorway and within easy striking distance of all the main areas of interest. There is lots to do for family's and despite the weather being poor we had a great time - we will return!
December 2012
It was so good to be back at Whiteholme Cottage it being such a homely well equipped place. Excellent amenities and Barbara the owner couldn't have done more to make our week go very well.
February 2010
We spent the coldest, snowiest week of the winter up at Backbarrow. The weather was so bad that the cottage owner had to make 2 valiant attempts to get there to prepare the cottage for us. We were unsure whether we would be able to get there from south of Manchester through a blizzard. But we did, to find that everything possible had been done for us. A wonderful week walking through deep crisp snow under blue skies, then back to a warm snug cottage with a roaring log fire in the evening.
December 2011
Friendly owner welcomed us at the cottage with lots of interesting details of the area. Cottage itself was comfortable and was in a central position for all the tourist things that you would want to see and do. Would recommend to other people and if we holiday in Cumbria again ... would book again.
September 2010
We've been staying in self catering cottages for over 20 years. This property was the best: so clean, homely, well equipped and spacious. Also, the location was fabulous.
November 2011
The welcome received by Whiteholme's owner is truly lovely and reassuring. The advice and the unexpected extras prepared for your stay are thoughtful and appreciated. The cottage offers a homely and comfy destination to relax in after each day of exploring the delights of the picturesque lake district. The garden retreat with its views are wonderful. A return visit well definitely be planned for the future.
December 2009
Spent an unforgettable week, starting with the lovely owners who were very welcoming and helpful, even giving us a bottle of bubbly to help us relax! The house was great, two very comfortable bedrooms with fantastic views, a comfortable sitting room with a working fireplace, logs supplied! Great kitchen and bathroom with absolutely everything thought of. The garden was very pretty with fantastic views across the valley, could see the steam train going up and down, and the sunsets! The cottage was central in a great location, good walking all around, and a short drive from lots of lovely places; we loved it all.
December 2009
The cottage had everything we needed and the owners made us feel at home on the first day. It was our first family holiday with our new baby and everything ran smoothly with all the home comforts provided.
August 2012
The cottage is very comprehensively equipped and it has some thoughtful touches. The Owner was extremely helpful and offered much useful information on hand over. The location couldn't be bettered being easily accessible from the motorway and within easy striking distance of all the main areas of interest. There is lots to do for family's and despite the weather being poor we had a great time - we will return!
December 2009
A wonderful homely cottage with open fires with a spectacular view from the garden. I find it hard to leave the cottage as I could just sit and watch the train going back and forth, the waterfall, the woodpecker, the fighter jets and B52 bomber flying past. Wonderful owners always so kind to us. Would highly recommend.
December 2009
We were welcomed warmly by the owner of this property, and found that it was well equipped, and comfortable. Situated at the southern end of the Lake District, we completed many enjoyable walks and site-seeing trips during our week. The cottage is in Backbarrow, up a steep hill; it would be difficult to get to and fro without your own car, but the hill-side location gives you a beautiful view, over the steam railway, and the sun-set from the small garden is wonderful!
December 2009
Met by owner on arrival. Neighbours also very friendly. Home was very clean and amenities good. The location was very scenic and close to main roads leading into lakes. Liked the area very much and the cottage was lovely - perhaps would have preferred more room around dining table. Overall a great place to stay.
